National cricket selector Mark Greatbatch was today named as the new coach of the Blackcaps.

The former New Zealand representative will take up the appointment ahead of the series against the touring Bangladesh side, which begins with a Twenty20 match in Hamilton on Wednesday.

New Zealand Cricket said Greatbatch, a left-handed batsman in his playing days, would join the existing coaching team of Mark O'Donnell and Shane Jurgensen.

He would take on particular responsibility for developing batting performance within the team.

NZC chief executive Justin Vaughan said skipper Daniel Vettori would continue his high-level involvement in team selection, tactics and strategy.

Vaughan said there had been a lot of thought on how to take the Blackcaps forward, without upsetting the momentum established by the current leadership.

"I know Mark is strongly supportive of the way the team has progressed and will complement Daniel well."

Greatbatch replaces Andy Moles, who resigned in October after players expressed dissatisfaction with his methods.

Vaughan said NZC considered several high-profile overseas options for the job.

Greatbatch was highly respected in cricketing circles both in New Zealand and internationally, he said.

"Mark is already close to the team by virtue of his selectorial role, and through his recent stint with the team in Dubai," he said, referring to the Blackcaps' series against Pakistan.

"Our experiences with Mark have been consistently good. His recent elevation onto the national selection panel has been viewed as an outstanding success, and he has received overwhelming praise for his communication and honesty with players and coaches."

Greatbatch, 46, said he was looking forward to working even more closely with the squad and was excited by the potential there.

"There is a real desire for success within this current Blackcaps unit and there are some very talented individuals," he said.

"I believe that I can make a very positive contribution to the team and to the batting unit in particular."

I would pay money to see footage of Greatbatch's catch in a one dayer v england 1988 NZ batted second reaching 208 for win.I think it was the second one dayer in the series The catch was the best I have ever scene he leaped 10 ft dropped and caught it 4 or 5 times in mid air. It made very few highlight reels but it was super human. I for one am glad he's the new coach

Once again NZ Cricket has shot itself in the foot, appointed a puppet with Vittori pulling the strings. What is wrong with Sports Administrators in this country? Not only cricket getting things completely wrong, but also Tennis, Rugby, and Bowls. But It guess that's what you can expect from a country will low expectations.

What are you guys smoking? The black caps are ranked 4th in the world (and only just behind South Africa), we have THE TOP RANKED ODI bowler in the WORLD - Vettori, we have Mills at number 4 and Bond at 7 (IN THE WORLD), we have one of the best all rounders in the world in Oram...we have batsmen and bolwers who are highly sought after for the IPL and are being paid huge bucks including Bond, McCullum, Taylor, Vetorri etc.

I think you guys need to do your homework before you make comments like you have. Oh and Bill, obviously you dont know enough to comment as its spelt "Vettori" not "Vittori".

Bill, your right. First thing he has got to do is knock these prima donnas down a peg or two and have them go out and all play like Aussie - all going for the high runs, not just a couple of them. A start might be for NZ Cricket to cut the pay packets of a few of them. HellI would go out and try to hit the ball for 100K +!

Good luck Greatbatch, you will need it with this bunch of Prima Dona's. It will be interesting to see how long he sticks around with the players still having all the say, especially Vittori who I believe is a poor captain.
