The shortage was quickly dubbed 'Marmageddon'

Some good news and bad news for Marmite fans.

Sanitarium is confident production of the yeast spread can begin again by the end of October.

But general manager Pierre van Heerden says that doesn't mean it'll be back on the shelves straight away.

"With the different yeasts coming in from different sources, we first have to produce bulk stock. Once we've got all of that processed we can then blend them, and only once we've done that can we process and pack."

Mr van Heerden says it could be next year before the spread is available in shops.

Sanitarium was forced to close its Christchurch production plant in November 2011, and the Kiwi favourite began disappearing off shelves in March.

The shortage was quickly dubbed 'Marmageddon'.

Seriously, why could production plant not be moved to city with stable ground until the old one could be fixd? I know there would be a cost but i doubt very much it would be enough to bring down the company! I am now resigned to the fact that i will have to move to the darkside of vegemite & sadly i will stay there. So sorry marmite i will miss you, but your parents have been stringing this out a little too long. Goodbye old friend Lee

Really dissappointed that we will taste marmite until 2013. Probably we will not see it again. July, October, 2013????? Surely even though plant etc had to be strengthen some sort of planning should have gone into the yeast and its preparation.

I've gone off Sanitarium anyway. Bullying tactics with the people that brought in UK Ma'amite, and now not allowed to sell it. Going for vegemite now.
And not paying taxes!! whats with that? disgusting way for a company to behave. Totally lost respect.

I agree, they SHOULD be paying company tax and not hiding behind their religion which exempts them from paying tax on their profits. The Govt seriously needs to adddress this tax loophole and make them pay their far share. Everyone else has too!
