Marmite fans will be without their beloved yeasty spread for longer than first thought, after engineers identified more structural damage to Sanitarium's Christchurch factory.
Sanitarium's general manager Pierre van Heerden says further deconstruction of a part of the factory, next to where the Marmite plant is located, is required to strengthen the building.
It's expected Marmite production won't get under way again until October, Mr van Heerden says.
"Like our consumers we are frustrated at the length of time this is taking, but the safety of our staff has to be our first priority," he said.
It was originally anticipated operations at Sanitarium's Christchurch plant would resume in July.
