Despite its one-sided nature, seamer Chris Martin sees New Zealand's record Test cricket victory over Zimbabwe as boding well for the tougher battles to come this summer.

The Black Caps took just three days, one of which was mostly lost to rain, to beat Zimbabwe by an innings and 301 runs in Napier, wrapping up the match late on Saturday.

Their next Test opponents will be South Africa, whom they host in a three-match series in March.

Martin says the way he and the rest of the New Zealand pace quartet - Doug Bracewell, Tim Southee and Trent Boult - stuck to the task against Zimbabwe will stand them in good stead against any opponent.

"I think the consistency with which we've attacked that off-stump line, with a little bit of movement, and the way we've drawn them into playing shots they perhaps didn't want to, is always going to be a competitive ability," he said.

"All of those things, we're going to have to do longer against South Africa, but they definitely bode well for the ability of our boys to remain composed, put the ball in the right spots and get the result."

The victory over Zimbabwe was New Zealand's biggest in any Test and it came after they bowled out the tourists twice on Saturday - for 51 and 143.

Man-of-the-match Martin was the chief destroyer, with a career-best 6-26 in the second innings.

The 37-year-old's match figures of 8-31 took him to 218 Test wickets, equal third with Chris Cairns on the New Zealand all-time list.

Martin, Bracewell, Southee and Boult were also involved in the Black Caps' victory over Australia in Hobart in December, and Martin likes the tactic of having a quartet of quicks operating together.

"The four guys with the ball, they all do something a little bit different, they're all hungry," he said.

"I think we don't get overbowled so there's a little bit of venom in every spell."
