Fire threatening Great Barrier pines
Tue, 22 Jan 2013 4:45p.m.
Homes and factories on Great Barrier Island have been evacuated as fire crews battle a large blaze.
Emergency services were called to the fire at Kaitoke Beach on the east of the island, which sits north of Coromandel, about 1:20pm, Fire Service northern communications spokesman Steve Smith said.
Eleven crews were responding, and three helicopters were being used to douse the fire, which has begun to spread through a mature pine forest.
They were also using chainsaws to help create fire breaks.
Six businesses and 20 homes have been evacuated because of the blaze.
Just two days ago, dozens of firefighters battled a vegetation blaze spreading over 5000sq m, which may have reignited, causing the latest fire.
