Mayor ditches eco-friendly car for performance model

Auckland is staking its claim for a world first but it is something many ratepayers will not be happy about.

Mayor John Banks is being accused of doing a u-turn in the choice of mayoral car.

Gone is his predecessor's environmentally friendly model in favour of a high performance, luxury replacement.

Former mayor Dick Hubbard chose a environmentally-friendly Prius to make a statement - we can't go on pumping our cities full of greenhouse gases.

But now it's been sold off and replaced with a Holden Calais.

"Auckland might take the record as the only city that's actually sold a hybrid car and gone back to conventional cars," says Hubbard.

New mayor Banks prefers something a little racier. He scrapped the Prius in favour of high performance and luxury. But these come at a cost.

"Aukland struggles with its air quality and the car he is driving produces at least twice as much noxious emissions as one of these (Prius models)," says Stephen Bollard of the Clean Green Car Company.

A Calais also uses at least twice as much fuel as a Prius.

John Banks wasn't available for an interview but his office told 3 News it was a question of space. He needs a larger car to fit his family and he says the Prius just did not measure up.

"If he was getting a people mover and needed to take more than 4 or 5 people around that might have some validity. But I don't think realistically that there's any difference between this (Prius) and a Holden as far as how many people it can carry around," says Bollard.

"It's just a total Luddite reaction, it's very, very sad. It's a total abdication of mayoral responsibilities," says Hubbard.

A handful of New Zealand mayors now drive hybrid cars.

Auckland's mayoral car comes up for renewal every 3 years. Banks got rid of his Prius six months early, just before his counterpart in Napier bought one.

That’s what happens when you vote back in someone what has a proven track record for looking out for himself and not the public he was voted in to work for. (Reminds me of the US voting Bush back in) How can over half of Auckland be so stupid. I certainly didn’t vote for him.

It's still probably better than a 15 year old jappa. In addition to this forget public transport, people will start to get self-drive cars in 5 years time and it'll be in every new car in 15-20. They will probably be electric and "bingo" our green house gas emission problems are solved.

Finally, old Banksie does something right. About time something good came out of his mayoralty. Ditch the Spaceship and get a real man's car. If you've ever been in a Prius, it's like something out of science fiction on the inside, from the computer console in the middle of the dashboard to the 'on' button to start the thing. More hi-tech bells and whistles to go wrong and cause grief. Forget that hippie garbage and give those goody goody wowsers the finger. If you want to 'save the planet', just switch to a clean-burning fuel, rather than that electric/hybrid rubbish. Hi-tech junk like that is for nerds.

Keep dreaming your delusion. I know my material, I'm Mining Engineer by profession and worked for an oil company in Europe.

Do some research. Start with The Last Oil Shock by David Strahan. Then do a Google on Matt Simmons or T Bone Pickens or Dr Colin Campbell.

Then feel free to chat with me.

Even the most fuel efficient means of transport will contribute to urban sprawl.

The new hybrids on offer are certainly not cheap and promise to be a passing fad. Banksie has only followed common sense in opting for a decently sized car and ditching the sewing machine. Popular well maintained performance cars command good resale value and three years should see the ratepayers getting value for money.

Don't worry - he will soon be walking or using a cycle when peak oil kicks in.

Once peak oil kicks in Aucklanders won't be worried about the air quality any longer - they will just be cursing the cretins that made Auckland one of the worst cities for urban sprawl.
