Last week, the US announced plans to build up its navy fleet in the Asia Pacific – a response to China's rising military power according to analysts.
That was quickly followed by a Russian pledge to strengthen its military ties with China. The two countries have planned more joint exercises.
The geopolitics of this region are complex and ever-changing, and New Zealand must navigate its way through this to maintain strong partnerships with all these players.
The man charged with this mission is Foreign Minister Murray McCully.
Another key player is Phil Goff, who was the trade minister back in 2008 when he signed the free trade agreement with China.
