Murray McCully claims an internet posting by Chris Carter has politicised the meeting (NZPA)

A Labour MP's blog has derailed a planned meeting between the Foreign Minster and the opposition, because Murray McCully didn't like what it said.

The Minister was due to discuss the Government's push to legalise whaling in the Southern Ocean but is claiming the meeting has been politicised by the internet posting.

Labour's foreign affairs spokesman Chris Carter wrote the story and claims the Government is backing down from the idea.

He says New Zealand is out of touch with its anti-whaling allies and should challenge the Japanese in court and not u-turn on the country’s commitment to outlaw whaling.

“Why doesn’t New Zealand stand with our Aussie mates and say ‘look we’ll join you, we’ll take the Japanese to the international court because they’re using a loophole’,” he says.

Mr McCully dismisses the claim the deal will be allowed to quietly die and argues many whales could be saved by the policy.

The Japanese are not offering to stop whaling, what they are saying is if New Zealand etc agree that the IWC should regulate whaling (like it is supposed too, but has not been doing), then Japan will agree to reduce the numbers of whales they catch for 10 years in return (as a carrot). It's a simple situation. Does New Zealand care about "saving whales", or about "saving the anti-whaling policy and that part of our identity"? The National led government seems interested in saving some whales, whereas Labour seems interested in maintaining the "no whaling!" policy, which doesn't actually work since Japan and other whaling nations are not subject to the cultural whims of New Zealanders.

What does Carter feel that as the Japanese are whaling under a specific clause, call it loophole if you like, that it would be virtually impossible to win the case in court? Key's position is in agreement with a proposal to be made under the Whaling Convention which would see the Japanese type of whaling activity stop and an ever decreasing allowable catch to be made elksewhere. Not too simple to understand the common sense in that rather than wasting vast sums of taxpayers' money in a no win situation.
