Foreign Minister Murray McCully is being criticised for using defence force aircraft to travel to a meeting in Vanuatu, at a cost of $75,000.

In Parliament yesterday Labour MP David Shearer questioned Prime Minister John Key over the expense.

Mr Key last month came under fire last month for using a defence Iroquois helicopter to attend the Hamilton V8s then a black tie dinner at the Royal Auckland Golf Club in Otahuhu.

"Is he aware that the Minister of Foreign Affairs spent at least $75,000 travelling to Vanuatu by the Royal New Zealand Air Force in February this year to attend a meeting lasting just a few hours?" Mr Shearer asked.

He said commercial flights would have cost about $4000.

Mr Key, who approved the trip, said he did not know the exact cost.

"But I am sure the minister would have done that only if it was believed to be in the best interests and the best use of taxpayers' dollars to do so."

Mr McCully told Radio New Zealand this morning that the costings Labour gave were inaccurate but did not say what the cost was.

"These are more expensive aircraft to travel on than commercial flights."

He had originally said he would not be able to attend the meeting but was told the defence aircraft was available and other delegations including Samoa and Tuvalu wanted a lift.

"I accepted the advice I should go there, but commercially I couldn't get there and back with the other constraints that I had."

He came back on an Orion because the aircraft that took him broke down.

What with modern technology no need for McCully to go there anyway, meetings can be conferance calls and networked anywhere around the world ,time these creeps realised they are taking 50% plus out of the taxpayers income by way of income tax property taxes , fuel taxes, GST ,taxes on taxes these polititions have outdone King John and the Sheriff of Notingham when it comes to over taxing the hard working citizens of this country, key is dumb if he approves something without knowing the cost involved ,first rule of bussiness KNOW your COSTS, key must have slept through that lesson

Well there goes more of my tax money. What the hell was he thinking and what was Keys thinking. The little people are going though hell at the moment what with food always on the raise and now with petrol going up yet again there are plenty of us who could do with a holiday so maybe next time there's a meeting he could fill the plane and take some of us with him.

The question to ask is was the plane going there anyway as I am aware they fly in supplies sometimes? Did the the other politicians from Tuvalu and Samoa contribute? Would you rather he sat around for four days waiting for a return flight when he has other business to attend to?

You would think that $1200 for an economy class ticket... when we are afterall borrowing 300 million dollars a week to keep the country a flot would have been a far more reasonable cost to the tax payer.

Key flying around in Airforce helicopters, McCully flying around using Airforce resources as well.

I wouldnt be suprised if the next suggestion from National is that John Key gets to buy his own Airforce 1 plane.

Ordinary Kiwis struggle while these guys laugh it up on the tax payers dime.

I urge John Campbell to do a thorough investigation and interview on this farce. We the taxpayers need to know and have the right to know just what is going on in this country. The whole Government system is becoming a complete
mockery.
I also read that the "do-gooders" are now pressing for "small time drug dealers" to be allowed to carry out there death peddling without fear of recrimination.
The situation has now become very serious and disturbing and I consider it the right of every law-abiding New Zealander to demand that Government should come clean and answer the too many unanswered questions that are being ignored.

It was wrong, but is it any worse than Harawira calling for a by-election ($500,000 taxpayer cost) with only months to go until the general elections? I think not.

Good old David Shearer - a bit of "Goff-itis" creeping in, nothing better to whinge about and we had hopes he would bring some commonsense to Labour. Convinced now that Labour and Greens are all deadbeats with no idea at all of what's important.

Wholeheartedly agree with all comments made by Mike, Cato and Davey - Our Government needs to be accountable for all taxpayer spending - it is not a "free for all", we're scaping to survive weekly - WHAT FOR - so they can spend our hard earned money!!
