Speaking at the Future of Asia conference in Tokyo today, Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully urged Japan to embrace globalisation to rebuild the nation.

Mr McCully is visiting Japan to promote stronger economic ties with the nation and said he hoped Japan would join the Trans Pacific Partnership agreement.

“Japan is the only major regional economy with which we do not have an FTA concluded or under negotiation,” he said.

“We envisage a FTA what is trade enhancing and win-win for both countries.”

Mr McCully said Japan was once among New Zealand’s top three trading partners but has since slipped.

The minister also thanked Japan for their assistance in both the September and February earthquakes.

He said the Japan quake really put Christchurch’s disaster into perspective and brought both countries closer by the tragedies.

“New Zealand sent a search and rescue team to be at Japan’s side, as Japan had been at ours, as well as funding to assist the survivors,” he said.

“The way in which partners from the region helped New Zealand and Japan highlights the fact that as a region we share both challenges and opportunities.”

Mr McCully addressed the disaster prone geography of the Asia-Pacific region and called for more cooperation in disaster management, saying it would help to maintain economic growth in the region.

“When faced with natural disasters, we need to ensure that we can get rescue teams on the ground as fast as possible and once there, ensure that they are well coordinated and can operate effectively, without being held up by bureaucratic processes.

“I believe that regional coordination of disaster management is essential to enhancing our common security, and indeed maintaining prosperity.”

jabba sadly that's just not true. As much as Key loves his "These are trying times but..." his party has done nothing but worsen the situation. We've barely, -barely- avoided a double dip recession, but trust me, the nats want nothing more than to sell you and everyone else in this country out.

Like free trade agreements have worked so well for us? Incredibly high dairy prices, the melamine problem in China that reflected so badly on New Zealand, lamb farmers getting so completely screwed over, and so on. Saying its a win-win doesn't mean its true, not when the evidence is so clear that the opposite is the case. I get the feeling Murry McCully is only pushing for this deal to try to lend legitimacy to such poor performing existing agreements. When you look at the bigger picture, the only parties benefiting are the ministers who are getting to travel around the world for free, while everyone else (both rich and poor) pay more and more. Just look at the last 10 years of failed talks in Doha, with no resolution as every country is only looking to their own interest (which is quite reasonable as they've noticed the lack of any benefit with very real and inherent risks).

This isnt about negotiating for NZ, its about securing Japan (an economic powerhouse) as part of the United States flock. There is heavy speculation that their dollar is about to collapse and they fear the growing strength of China etc...This is just America and its cronies pushing other powers into the fold to try prevent the lose of its num1 status.

jj/cameron .. what planet are you two from. If we had a Goff/King duo leading us with Silent T, Daffy, Cosgrove, Horomia, Dyson, Dalziel and Fenton et al in charge, we would be well and truly stuffed .. you have NO idea how lucky we are to have the Nats in charge during this WORLD recession.
