Would you like WiFi with that?
McDonald’s has just become the largest free internet provider in New Zealand with the company today announcing free WiFi in nearly all its restaurants nationwide.
With around 17 million customers expected over the summer months, McDonald’s managing director Mark Hawthorne says the service will be a bonus for travellers needing to check emails or browse the net.
“No matter where you are in New Zealand there will be a McDonald’s nearby, which makes us the perfect place to offer this kind of internet service,” he says.
Mr Hawthorne says other companies offer WiFi but charge customers an hourly rate – something McDonald’s didn’t want to do.
The internet service is currently available in 132 restaurants nationwide, with 145 of the nation’s 158 restaurants expected to be offering the service by the end of the year.
Mr Hawthorne says as with any technology service, some restaurants may experience teething problems, but they will be resolved as quickly as possible.
The WiFi service is provided by TelstraClear and access is available to customers with mobile phones or laptops.
McDonald’s says the service is completely free and no purchase is required to access the internet.
