An Auckland grandmother and health carer is vowing never to eat at McDonalds again after finding a maggot in a burger box she bought.

Linda MacDonald, 59, said she was disgusted when the found the maggot as she ate an Angus Burger Combo from the Pt Chevalier McDonald's.

She and a colleague were sharing the burger when they saw something "wiggling" in the box, the New Zealand Herald reported today.

Mrs MacDonald spat out what she was eating and ran to the toilet to throw up.

She rejected the McDonalds vouchers she was offered and told them she would never eat at McDonalds again.

McDonald's NZ boss Mark Hawthorne said he did not believe the maggot came from within the restaurant. It was dead when the company conducted tests. However, Mrs MacDonald said the maggot was alive when she found it and not tested for six days.

She said she wanted nothing from McDonalds except an apology and was upset at the company's reaction.

After rejecting vouchers she was sent $100 of Westfield shopping mall vouchers which she gave to her son.

Mr Hawthorne said the company had conducted a thorough investigation, which included the restaurant, suppliers of ingredients and independent laboratory testing.

He said the maggot was not associated with the beef patty. He said it was hard to determine the point of contamination they believed it was "unlikely to have resulted from McDonald's".

the test conducted on the maggot should have been conducted by an independent agency, not McD's themselves..totally biased. and it should not have been left for 6days. of course its ganna be dead!lol

Flies in McDonalds

Haven't been there for a bit, but the Manners Mall Wellington McDonalds always had flies - not one or two, but dozens, flying around inside. I often thought of how this would be allowed. Don't eat there now.....

Not surprised

I am not surprised. Hygene is only as good as the employees. A couple of years ago, at Lambton Quay McDonalds, I observed the 'shift manager' wrapping burgers in paper. A fairly straight job. Trouble was, he was licking his fingers each time he grabbed a new piece of paper. I pointed it out to the girl serving me, she went and talked to him, pointing me out. I then had him and another employee walking around me eyeballing me and scowling for the duration of the time it took me me to eat my meal. So not only did I now observe bad food hygene practice, but bully tactics too. Needless to say, I don't eat at LQ Mcs anymore.

I find it so funny how she found a maggot and then she complains and they offer her vouchers! Thats so stupid. "Oh yes Im sorry we put a maggot in your burger but here, take these free vouchers and get some more of our food."
