He's become a crowd favourite at Congressional and after his record breaking start to the US Open, Rory McIlroy set about turning a six shot advantage into an unassailable lead.

While he was shaky off the tee to begin with, McIlroy's short game proved impeccable.

While he couldn't match the feats of his opening rounds, his three-under 68 saw him extend his lead to eight shots - with his father on hand to witness his son re-write the record books.

He's become the first player to reach 14-under at the US Open, and the first to complete 54 holes in less than 200 strokes.

McIlroy needed to be at his best to hold off the chasing pack.  Y.E. Yang remains McIlroy's nearest challenger at six-under despite the Korean carding a disappointing one-under 70.

World number two Lee Westwood's just a shot back, he followed three back nine birdies with an eagle at the 16th.

Australian Jason Day's bogey-free six-under 65 also brought him to five under, but he's got little hope of catching the 22-year-old living up to his tag as the next big thing.
