Waikato police are speaking with witnesses to a meat cleaver attack in Ngaruawahia, which has left one man in a critical condition.

Thirty-nine-year-old Warren Lloyd Edwards appeared in court today charged with three counts of aggravated assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, following the attack on three men who were drinking behind shops last night.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Patterson says they have recovered a meat cleaver from the Newton St address where Edwards was arrested, but have not yet confirmed whether it was the weapon used.

“Today we concentrated on the scene where the incident took place, and we’re also doing forensic examinations of two vehicles and a dwelling which we believe are linked to the incident,” he says.

Edwards has been remanded in custody until November 1 for a psychiatric report.

What is sad about all of this is all four men have known each other for the better part of their lives.
Sadder still is the fact that the victim of the car theft is so well known by the victims of the cleaver attack - to know never to have gone down that road they had chosen.
