The Met Service removed third party ads after reports of a virus

It's not just going out in the cold that'll catch you a virus – just reading about it will too.

The Met Service's website – probably a popular one this week, with the weather the country has been having – is reportedly spreading a computer virus.

According to reports, the virus was embedded in third-party advertising displayed on the site.

The Met Service says it has removed the ads, and will be issuing a statement.

I am gutted. My computer crashed Monday night to point of being un-useable. I had basic protection on my computer which obviously wasn't good enough. I too would have thought being a prominent N.Z site I would have been safe. I too would like info on what to do now. I am a part time working single parent who can't afford a new computer!

Many people including myself have visited Met service’s web site over the last few days because of the bad weather. And as a result countless people have had their computers infected by Malware. I along with many others am outraged that MetService’s processes or lack thereof did not do enough to mitigate risk of this happening. I expected better from an SOE that provides important information to the public of NZ. This story is important and NZ public deserve to be informed by all available means including TV3 news team. I am also disappointed that Metservice have not notified people on their web site or provided information on how to remove the infection. Does the person that runs Met Service’s IT department not care to take any responsibility for the negligence and damage caused?
