A naked man has been shot to death by Miami police after he was found eating another man's face.

Police responded to reports of two men fighting on the MacArthur Causeway off ramp at about 2:00pm on Saturday (local time).

An officer approached the naked man and saw that he was chewing the other man's head, according to witnesses.

The attacker was shot after he ignored police requests to back away and continued to eat the other man.

Despite being shot, the attacker continued to eat the other man and was shot about six more times, according to witnesses.

The victim ended up with "virtually no face" said police sources, reports CBS Miami. He has been transported to hospital with critical injuries.

Detectives believe the victim may have been homeless and the naked man was suffering from "cocaine psychosis".

The identities of the men involved have not been released.

Thousands of people have descended on Miami's South Beach for the annual Urban Beach Weekend hip-hop festival.
