RadioLive host Michael Laws has slammed the release of record-breaking videogame Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and made a homophobic attack on the chief censor.

He talked about the game during the opening editorial of his radio show last Thursday – specifically, the controversial segment in which players go undercover to infiltrate a terrorist group and carry out an attack on civilians at an airport.

An outraged and misinformed Mr Laws exclaimed: "Gamers are a very unusual group of people. If mass murder was ever to be committed in this country, it would be committed by a gamer."

Despite acknowledging the game was restricted as an R18 item, Mr Laws asked his listeners: "Is this what we want for our kids? A glorification of the killing of innocent people by terrorists?"

Mr Laws questioned New Zealand's chief censor Bill Hastings' decision to allow the game to be sold in New Zealand and made special mention of his sexual preference.

"I know the gay guy we've got at the moment who is the Chief Censor Bill Hastings is a liberal sort of guy," said Mr Laws.

"I don't care if he lets gay sex through because, well, that's what he enjoys watching in a darkened room somewhere and thinks everybody else of his ilk should be able to do so as well."

3 News contacted gaming website NZgamer.com to get a response to Mr Laws' comments from New Zealand's gamer community.

"To answer Mr Laws question: No. This is not what we want for our kids - that's why Modern Warfare 2 has an R18 rating," says NZGamer.com site manager Aaron Scott.

"NZGamer.com has many reviewers, who play games on a regular basis. The last time we checked none are mass murderers, they know their right from wrong - just like most other Kiwi gamers do."

An online debate on the subject the took place on the RadioLive website, feel free to leave comments there or in the box below.

Maybe he should actually play the game before he makes comments it sez when you start would you like to skip it and if you select no you still have the option to skip it at the start of the mission.

Micheal Laws doesn't say "violent video games" - but instead lumps all gamers into the one category.

He's saying that people who play sim-city, kungfu panda, lego starwars, harry potter games and farmville on facebook are in danger of becoming mass murders...

p.s. Whanganui

Last time I looked - I could see how Hitler killed millions of innocent people on the history channel....or how Jim Jones killed hundreds of people in Jones Town on Discovery Channel - funny thing is, all these were real yet the game is just that, a game....any kid can watch TV and get far worse views of real people than MW2.

It's about time Laws was sanitised from politics as he's a self serving arrogant prat who only passes comments to satisfy his own ego. He has no real compassion or empathy for his community or his job.

Anything Michael Laws says is intended for one thing - to draw attention to Michael Laws. He's a career politician who will say anything to provoke a reaction and to appeal to the fearful elderly in Wanganui and beyond. Just ignore him.

Laws is a foolish man who always speaks relentlessly with utter ignorance. What a dick. Tosser.

Mr Laws, you are a retard. Get your information right. Because you are NOT a terrorist but a man undercover, it is all apart of the storyline you dick head. If all of the video games are influencing me to do things then i might go in my spaceship and kill some zombie aliens. And its better on a game then in real life. Also its not Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. its just Modern Warfare because it isn't a massive war like the other call of duty games. I'll say Whangarei right if you say the games name right. And no-one wants to listen to you yack on about things that you don't have all the information on. I'll just say some things about you that isn't all correct.

Ahhh i love this game so much that im going to go and kill lots of people at the airport just because the game makes it look so fun.

No, you aren't killing people in MW2, any more than Arnold Schwarzenegger is 'killing people' in Total Recall, it's called 'playacting', it's the same reason that Roger Moore is not an international secret agent, cannot drive a car sideways across a bridge and doesn't have a watch-controlled gunship, because it is fantasy. If we follow this line to its conclusion then Faran Tahir should be locked up for playing a Terrorist in Iron Man...
