Earlier this year, we witnessed one of the greatest marketing disasters in New Zealand history. Mike King, the Kiwi bloke who makes people laugh for a living, had been fronting a high-profile campaign to get us all to eat more New Zealand pork.

But when he discovered the conditions some pork was being farmed in, he changed his tune.

Pork's poster boy became a whistle blower, taking many consumers on the same voyage of discovery he had been on.

So, six months on, what's changed? Are those pigs out of their sow crates? Can you eat your bacon with a clear conscience?

Animal welfare campaigners SAFE, the people behind Mr King's conversion, say no. Both they, and Mr King himself, are calling for a consumer boycott of all pork that isn't free range.

They have even made a TV ad, although it is very different from the TV ads he used to make.

Campbell Live speaks to Mike King and CEO of the Pork Industry Board, Sam McIvor.

Sam McIvor needs to back up what hes saying is best practice with facts. Maybe a documentary with both views put forward equally then people could make their own informed choices. c'mon sammy, you werent this callous as a teenager!

There is ways to run sows so you don't need stalls.
you can run then in groups on straw, I have 25 to 28 sows per pen, put them all together with a boar, they fight for 1 to 2 days but as long as can get away they sort things out, we don't have many thats die or break legs from fighting, perhaps 2 percent. their life and condition is heaps better than when had them in stalls. I run 350 sows indoor.

Kel..you are missing the point...I am not talking about supporting Mike King...Mike King is not locked up in disgusting and cruel conditions. I am talking about people supporting their own integrity, morals and conscience. As it happens I CAN afford a free range ham so I will be buying one. If I COULDN'T afford one and the alternative was buying a cheap non free range then I would go without and not miss it ...just as I have not missed it all year. Clearly you don't have the intelligence to understand this very simple moral concept or you are lacking in any type of empathy!! I know...they are big words...maybe you could spend your money on a dictionary rather than a poisoned leg of flesh. If you don't care about yourself...then at least think of your family...how nutritious and healthy do you think meat raised in such misery would be. Wake up.

POSTING EVERYTHING IN CAPS IS NOT VERY SMART. You have a key on your keyboard called caps lock, use it.

HELLO JONATHAN, 60% OF PORK EATEN IN NZ IS IMPORTED WITH THE SAME OR LOWER ANIMAL WELFARE STANDARDS. ARE WE NOT TRYING TO DO THINGS BACK 2 FRONT? HOW ABOUT WE STOP IMPORTS THAT DONT MEET OUR REVISED ANIMAL WELFARE STANDARDS, THEN FARMERS WONT BE SCARED OF INVESTING IN EXTENSIVE FARMING. BAN FACTORY FARMING BY ALL MEANS, THEN IMPORTS WILL REACH 95%, THATS A FACT. FARMERS NEED TO MAKE MONEY, WHO DOESNT? IF THERES A DRAMATIC INCREASE IN FREE RANGE PORK AVAILABLE IT WILL CRASH THE MARKET. WHY? BECAUSE THERE IS ONLY A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THE POPULATION WHO CAN AFFORD IT NOW. PEOPLE WHO CANT AFFORD IT WILL BE BUYING IMPORTS. THE MAD BUTCHER DOES VERY WELL DOESNT HE? OH AND NZ LARGEST HERD APPROX 3K-4K SOWS DOWN SOUTH ALSO A FACTORY FARM. ALL THE SOWS ARE KEPT OUTSIDE, ALL THE PROGENY GROWN INDOORS. WE BETTER DECIDE WHAT A FACTORY FARM IS. ALSO FROZEN PIGLETS DONT LOOK VERY NICE ON VIDEO, AS DOES DEAD ABANDONED LITTERS FROM HEAT STROKE. GOOD ON THE OUTDOORS.

GOOD BYE PIGGY WIGGLERS, THE BUTCHERS KNIFE IS CALLING!
