Mike Portnoy

Founding member of Dream Theater Mike Portnoy has quit the group after his bandmates refused to take a hiatus so he could enjoy a much-needed break.

The drummer helped form the band in 1985 but decided he was burning out under the constant pressure of work.

Portnoy asked the four other members if they could take some time out in the hope he could return to making music with them when he recovers.

But he claims he was forced to walk away completely when they made it clear they would be continuing without him.

In a statement announcing the news, the band says, "It is with profound sadness - regret - we announce that Mike Portnoy, our lifelong drummer and friend, has decided to leave Dream Theater. Mike's stature in the band has meant the world to all of us professionally, musically and personally over the years. There is no dispute: Mike has been a major force within this band... All of us in Dream Theater wholeheartedly wish Mike the best on his musical journey."

But Portnoy released his own statement revealing his "hurt" over their decision to continue without him: "I really needed a break from the band in order to save my relationship with the other members and keep my DT spirit hungry and inspired.

"Sadly, in discussing this with the guys, they determined they do not share my feelings and have decided to continue without me rather than take a breather... I even offered to do some occasional work throughout 2011 against my initial wishes, but it was not to be... While it truly hurts for me to even think of a Dream Theater without Mike Portnoy (hell, my father named the band!), I do not want to stand in their way, so I have decided to sacrifice myself and simply leave the band so as to not hold them back against their wishes."

Earlier this year (10), Portnoy stepped in to temporarily replace Jimmy Sullivan in Avenged Sevenfold after the drummer's death from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs in December (09).

well...we can either mope about this or that. he said this - they said that b.s. however, i will choose to do something a lot of ppl probably wont. and that is to Thank Mike Portnoy. Thank you for all the great music you have brought to us. No, you can not be replaced. but if "the spirit carries on" then so be it. you were a key contributer in a band that was capable of making grown men cry. And you gave us 25 years of amazing moments. Thank you so much. As you stated, it really is going to be weird imagining dreamtheater without portnoy. on a side note. Mikes mindset is clearly more experimental than the other members. Even though we love DT, there is other music out there that is very diverse. Mike wants a piece of that and some of it (ulp) may not even be prog metal. I think all these side projects etc have tuned him onto different interests etc. DreamTheater will sound different on their next album NO MATTER WHAT now. and musically speaking, i think that is a good thing

Seems to me that Mike did this to himself and put the band is this position. I mean he chose to work so hard for the band and he chose to go on tour with A7X. The other guys need to make a living and need to work. Mike is one member of a five member group, despite what he says or thinks. What are the other guys suppose to do just let Mike roll over them and do whatever he wants despite their desire to work. Sounds like Mike is the one to blame for this departure. And for him to blame the other guys is a low blow. Maybe the other guys can finally be free of Mike's tyranny in the band, however helpful it may have been for their career, which is surely was. Don't get me wrong I love Mike and he has turned me on to so many great bands in my life but I think he has been overstepping his bounds in DT for a long while now and it finally has caught up to him.

What? are the other guys in this band nuts? Portnoy is not repalceable period! Not only does he pound the drums he also writes alot of the lyrics. I don't get it , that's like replceing Neil Peart in Rush!
