Police have named the man killed while working to clear a massive slip on the road to Milford Sound.

He was 67-year-old Graham Robert Brown, of Dunedin.

Mr Brown was working near Monkey Creek on State Highway 94, near the Homer Tunnel, yesterday afternoon when he was hit in the head by a compressed air hose. Ambulance staff who flew in from Te Anau could not revive him.

Two other workers suffered minor injuries.

An investigation by Occupational Safety and Health and the contracting company Mr Brown worked for is under way.

The Milford highway was closed last weekend after boulders as big as 500 tonnes fell onto the road. One lane was reopened on Thursday but the road was closed again today because of snow forecast for the area, the New Zealand Transport Agency said.
