One of the men behind controversial pop act Milli Vanilli has hit out at the current batch of chart toppers, branding them "fakers".

The band caused outrage in 1990 when it was revealed they'd used session singers to provide the vocals on their biggest hit ‘Girl You Know It's True’.

But Fabrice Morvan claims modern acts are just as fake, because they lip-synch during live performances and rely on technology in the studio.

He tells USA Today, "It's not about being authentic anymore, it's about (being) entertaining."

Milli Vanilli made history when they became the first act to return a Grammy, awarded to them for ‘Girl You Know It's True’.

Twenty years on, Morvan insists he and bandmate Rob Pilatus were never asked to hand the award back - they did it voluntarily.

He says, "We wanted to give the Grammy back. We felt in our hearts that it would be a good gesture to do that. But (the press) made it look as though (Grammy organisers) wanted it back. They could have come to my house and gotten it."
