Are you not forgetting the simple facts people? Climate change did not happen over night and whats a little mining going to do to our landscape? The Goverment would not just destroy the one thing that is the most important to the New Zealand economy. Tourism is the most important income for New Zealand, so why would the Goverment be stupid enough to destroy the landscape on which our econonmy realise on? Come on Karen you think little New Zealand creates global warming? If you have a problem you really need to go and preach to China or good old America. they are the ass of the world, poring shit all over us. Maybe if they consumed less, the world wouldnt be heating up. As for the minig- think of why we have politicans for- they are there to improve our country, and if they think mining is the way to go then why shouldnt we do it. I'm not pro-mining or indeed pretend to know the facts, but what I do know is Lucy worked for a mining company in the late 80s. Again, I don't know the facts but I would assume/hope standards surrounding land rehab have become more stringent since Lucy's mining days.
