Schedule 4 land is in short, our most ecologically-prized land, including all 14 national parks.

On Saturday, tens of thousands of people marched up Auckland's Queen St in opposition to the mining of that land.

Estimates of the actual numbers vary, from 20,000 up to 50,000 people.

In any case, it was a huge turnout and one of the largest protests seen in New Zealand in recent years – around 10 times larger than the well-funded ‘March for Democracy’, for example.

Tonight we ask why were all these people there?

To help us answer that, two key players in the debate are in the studio - Lucy Lawless, the high-profile face of the Greenpeace campaign against Schedule 4 mining; and Gerry Brownlee, Minister of Energy.

Watch the video.

Are you not forgetting the simple facts people? Climate change did not happen over night and whats a little mining going to do to our landscape? The Goverment would not just destroy the one thing that is the most important to the New Zealand economy. Tourism is the most important income for New Zealand, so why would the Goverment be stupid enough to destroy the landscape on which our econonmy realise on? Come on Karen you think little New Zealand creates global warming? If you have a problem you really need to go and preach to China or good old America. they are the ass of the world, poring shit all over us. Maybe if they consumed less, the world wouldnt be heating up. As for the minig- think of why we have politicans for- they are there to improve our country, and if they think mining is the way to go then why shouldnt we do it. As for Labour and Green, they only oppose National because thats all they can do- thats the only way than can gain power. Greens and labourist- please go and get a educatuion.

This mining is a joke. Also, its obvious on who's side John Cambell is on, he shouldn't side with Lucy so much, although I do agree with her.

Jackie you're wrong, Lucy won the debate, and is very informed and knows her facts. All the Lucy critics are wrong.

Come top of your class in english did you? (good use of the F word - NOT). Stick to your greenie flat/70yrold earth science like most greenies. But remember, if it wasn't for mining you will have no Queen St to walk down (or Auckland)!!!

I'm not pro-mining or indeed pretend to know the facts, but what I do know is Lucy worked for a mining company in the late 80s. Again, I don't know the facts but I would assume/hope standards surrounding land rehab have become more stringent since Lucy's mining days.
