The Education Ministry is bringing forward Christmas pay for school staff, in a bid to smooth out problems with the Novopay system.
Since the $30 million payroll system was introduced about three months ago, some school staff have been under-paid, over-paid, or not paid at all.
Rebecca Elvy is the ministry's group manager and says the organisation will act swiftly for teachers if problems arise.
“There’s absolutely no reason why they should go without their pay,” says Ms Elvy. “Their schools should be able to advance funds to them if they haven’t been paid correctly, and if the school can’t they can get in touch with us and we can do it.”
But national secretary of the New Zealand Educational Institute, Paul Goulter, is not optimistic that the Christmas period will be problem-free.
“I think the Ministry has always wanted to get it right, and the issue is that it hasn’t known how to get it right, and it hasn’t been able to put enough resources into getting it right,” he says.
There will be an investigation into the Australian-based company's handling of Novopay's roll out early next year.
