The New Zealand Educational Institute is accusing the Government of making unwarranted and unacceptable threats toward Northland schools.
It comes after letters from the Ministry of Education told a number of schools that their boards will be replaced by limited statutory management.
The threats came as a response to some adding a disclaimer in their school's charter that mention National Standards are forced upon them by the Ministry.
National President of NZEI Ian Leckie says the charter belongs to the board of trustees:
"The ministry are bullying schools into doing it, making them do it, and then threatening them even if they don't use words that they find agreeable, including 'we are being made to do this under duress.'
"I think it is quite clear that the bullying tactics are just continuing on and on up [in Northland]."
Ian Leckie says school charters are supposed to reflect the expectations that individual communities have for their children.
