Hone Harawira says the cuts will cripple Maori development

Three hundred and fifty workers at Te Puni Kokiri, which advises the government on Maori affairs and development, are waking up to uncertainty today as $8 million is to be slashed from the budget as part of a major restructuring.

Staff have been told up to 50 people could lose their jobs over the next four years.

Public Service Association's Brenda Pilott says the scale of the changes has come as a shock.

“It may be several months actually before we hear the details,” she says. “We appreciated the early notice but of course the downside is now TPK staff will be wondering whether they have a job next year.”

Chief executive Leith Comer says the cuts are necessary to meet government targets.

Mana Party Hone Harawira says the job losses will cripple Maori development and affect programmes like Whanau Ora.

This Government is unreal, his last three years of its services that many human died and he wanted to blow up mines, build more prisons and seperates children's from families, ban drugs, changed the law and guns for the police protections but what about the people of New Zealand when approching an intruder? or intruders?..
This time he wanted to sell farms cheaper to forigners at 30 million per farm' which he could had tripple the asking prize, now job will be lost to many New Zealanders' and Ports to be sold' Is this Government fiddling or what's the story?..
Bare in mind without the Treaty this country the Aotearoa New Zealand will still belongs to the Tangata Whenuas and no such thing is a Crown..
This Government best to get his act together and think about our peoples interest and not his decision alone without the agreement of all parties to see what best for the country and its peoples future..
Most promises failed to meet it purposes thatcaused upsets, rethink COWBOYS..

This government hands out job cuts like they're handing out candy. Then has the cheek to moan on and on about people on the welfare. TPK won't be the last to see budget cuts in order for National to meet their target of making a small elite bigotted minority richer while the 99% of us suffer

I think Leith Comer is hoping for attrition and not filling current vacancies as a means to achieve the savings. However, my understanding is that Bill English is seeking more substantial savings in Governmnet expenditure so it could be case of a sinking lid. Interesting also that it is Hone Harawira that has come out strongly against the cuts. He was quite articulate on TV3 last night. The Labour Party's response has been quite muted and of course the Maori Party have been totally silent. Expect some fireworks at the Waitangi Day celebrations on Monday.

'Toby' if you got off you fat bum and worked you could be rich also. More typical moaning from the left - loser socialist who like to live in other peoples wallets and moan. Life is what you make it so stop moaning and yes news flash ! -National won the election and Labour lost. Get over it. Normal hard working Kiwis did not want the corrupt left back in power with their anti progresiive and socially destructive policies.

Well done John, that will secure my vote. This is a non-performing quango, it serves no useful purpose. The useless will protest, but good riddance.

@Toby John Key is nothing more than a shrewd little con man, all funny isnt it how the only people to benefit from John Key being in power is the exclusively rich brigade. No one else has benefitted from him being in power which is reflected in the fact that his entire government only managed to secure 34 % of the entire elligible vote. Thats a minority ruling the country.... a small pack of bigots, rednecks and Maori haters and people who believe the best way to fix poverty is to kill off the poor. John Key isnt "A politician with his heart on his sleeve" as he has referred to himself... he is an elitest bigot with no idea how to run the country. Look at all the young Nats posting here though.... young men and women sent out to post on the interent in favor of John Key... their instructions are to actively support all Keys policies... what they do is imply you are unemployed if you disagree with John Key... accuse you of being a leftie if you have a dissenting voice. But the reality that they cant cope with is 66 percent of elligible voters didnt vote for Act, National, the Maori Party or United future.... Its the one time that I know of in New Zealands electoral history that a minority rules... a very small minority of rednecks. Key failed to get a mandate from the people... badly failed to get a mandate.. even with labour being at its weakest point ever Key couldnt swing those votes and even managed to put off some of his own supporters. Bennett who was one of the only National ministers to lose her majority because she puts so many people off... yet she got a promotion based on her hate campagin against beneficiaries.
