Three hundred and fifty workers at Te Puni Kokiri, which advises the government on Maori affairs and development, are waking up to uncertainty today as $8 million is to be slashed from the budget as part of a major restructuring.
Staff have been told up to 50 people could lose their jobs over the next four years.
Public Service Association's Brenda Pilott says the scale of the changes has come as a shock.
“It may be several months actually before we hear the details,” she says. “We appreciated the early notice but of course the downside is now TPK staff will be wondering whether they have a job next year.”
Chief executive Leith Comer says the cuts are necessary to meet government targets.
Mana Party Hone Harawira says the job losses will cripple Maori development and affect programmes like Whanau Ora.
