"Moon man" Ken Ring has gone into hiding after receiving death threats and says he is no longer predicting earthquakes for fears he will be prosecuted.

Following Christchurch's deadly February quake, the astrological weather forecaster predicted another major quake was going to strike the city on March 20, sparking many people to flee.

His appearance on TV3's Campbell Live in late February had sparked multiple death threats on his life that "included the word kill and named my address", he told the Wairarapa Times-Age from a secret location this week.

He had reported four of the threats to police and had quit his Auckland home amid fears for himself and his family.

Mr Ring said he also feared he would be prosecuted for inciting a riot following his quake prediction.

"I've been virtually told by [ACC minister] Dr Nick Smith and Sir Peter Gluckman [the prime minister's scientific advisor] that I'm not qualified to put statements out about earthquakes. They will have me legally if I do that.

"Until they reverse that, I'm completely bound to silence. I don't want to go to jail.

"They said it was like calling out fire in a crowded theatre and that's against the law - it's called the riot act, and inciting riot."

Mr Ring said he has shunned all interview requests since filming the TV3 show and had sought medical help for stress following the death threats and heightened media attention.

He has had to cancel live engagements in Christchurch.

He said he would continue making astrological weather forecasts for New Zealand, but not earthquakes.

One thing I can say Ken Ring theory never put fear into me, I was too happy to hear his predictions on earth quakes and found it to be very interesting. Ken you are so right people has their own choice to be in fear.

"Astrological" weather forecasts? Useless, then. He may as well shut up about them too. Do us all a favour. Death threats? No rational person would waste their time. The irrational ones are his followers. Sounds like a beatup for sympathy to me.

The worst part in all of this, was he was as dead on accurate, with his range of dates for BOTH the SEP and FEB quakes.

Well this is very condictive.Mr ring was only two days out of his forecasting of another quake. Now when we see a gale force warning on tv weather and does not eventuate,is this not the same ?like wise when they say a tsnuami warning alert has been raised yet gets does not eventuate, also when they say the weather is fine on the coast and you end up getting large ground swells that can be disaster to small fishing boats. The weather reports are just a stab in the dark,as are only forcasted by radar from a satelite that could be many miles out.The only true forecasts that one could take notice of is when we had coastal ships and interisland ferries, also manned light houses that were in amongst the conditions so they knew what was going to happen,as they reported conditions all the time.

About time the Moonatic's psychobabble was silenced but death threats is taking it to extremes. Thanks John Campbell for putting him in his place with you Expose/Interview. The Moonatic really should have apologized to everyone here in Christchurch. His silence can only be a good thing while we attempt rebuilding and recovering from disasters real and imagined (By Him).

Come on New Zealand, just don't listen to this guy. Why on earth would anybody take this sort of pseudo science in any way seriously? It's the 21st century people, not the middle ages!
