The Little Mermaid will be re-released in September 2013

Movie bosses have announced they are re-releasing four of Disney's biggest animated classics following the huge success of The Lion King.

Since it was revived last month, The Lion King in 3D has added an extra US$80 million in ticket sales for the 1994 hit.

Now thanks to its second success at the box office, Disney and subsidiary Pixar are set to bring back Beauty and the Beast, Finding Nemo, Monsters, Inc. and The Little Mermaid for new audiences.

Alan Bergman, president of The Walt Disney Studios, says, "Great stories and great characters are timeless, and at Disney we're fortunate to have a treasure trove of both.

"We're thrilled to give audiences of all ages the chance to experience these beloved tales in an exciting new way with 3D - and in the case of younger generations, for the first time on the big screen."

Beauty and the Beast will be released in January, followed by Finding Nemo in September 2012, Monsters, Inc. in January 2013 and The Little Mermaid in September 2013.
