Christchurch is struggling with heavy rainfall

More heavy rainfall is on the way for an already sodden Canterbury.

A Metservice severe weather warning is in place for areas south of the Waimakariri River on Tuesday morning.

"This event is likely to have a significant impact since the ground is already saturated with water from recent rain events," the Metservice warned.

Bursts of rain on Tuesday could bring up to 60mm of rain.

The heaviest rainfall is expected from midday to midnight on Tuesday with intensities reaching up to 10mm an hour.

Downpours are also expected in east Otago with up to 90mm of rain expected to fall.

In Christchurch, 10 homes had to be evacuated after torrential rain caused flooding on Sunday night.

Dallington was particularly bad, as was St Albans, where Dudley Creek had burst its banks.

Dozens of homes were also threatened by flash flooding in Lyttelton, after a retaining wall burst.

On Tuesday morning a statement from Christchurch City Council says contractors were out overnight clearing slips, including a number on Dyers Pass Road.

Motorists are being advised to take care on the roads as pot holes are appearing and there is still a risk of further surface flooding.

Flooding has closed State Highway 75 from Birdlings Flat to Barrys Bay, according to the New Zealand Transport Agency.

Motorists are being urged to take care on SH75 from Christchurch to Birdlings Flat, SH75 from Barrys Bay to Akaroa, SH83 from Pukeuri to Duntroon and SH1 from Christchurch to To Rakaia.

In the North Island SH29, about 17km east of Tauranga near Ruahihi Road, has been reduced to one lane following a slip and motorists are being asked to avoid the area if possible. The road will be closed from 8am to 5pm on Saturday and Sunday while rocks are removed from the Ruahihi Bluffs.
