International arrivals and departures at Auckland Airport increased 1.6 percent in December and domestic passenger volumes increased 8.8 percent, the airport company said today.

International passenger growth was seen in Australian, United States, German and Japanese markets. Australian arrivals increased 8.9 percent, which Auckland Airport attributed to lower fares, increased competition and attractiveness of short haul holidays.

The 12.8 percent increase in arrivals from the US in December was the largest increase for that market against the prior corresponding period in 12 months.

The December increase in domestic volumes was the highest against the prior corresponding period than any of the last six months.
