Over 700 miners are now on strike – many in support of those who have walked off the job at three mines – and are in a standoff with Solid Energy.

About 145 workers at the Spring Creek mine near Greymouth will be the latest to down tools.

The escalating dispute began when workers at Huntly’s Rotowaro open-cast mine were locked out after launching go-slow industrial action over failed contract negotiations.

About 160 Huntly east underground mine workers walked out in support, and 400 workers at the Stockton mine on the West Coast have also walked off the job indefinitely.
