This winter has been one of the frostiest in recent years, and it is not the halfway mark of the season yet.

The frost also started earlier than usual this year, with last year’s first nationwide polar blast not hitting until mid-August.

iWitness Karena Turnock of Central Otago sent 3 News photos of the frost from this morning in Fruitlands and Earnscleugh.

Southland and Otago have had overnight lows plunging between -6degC and -11degC in the past week.

WeatherWatch.co.nz head analyst Philip Duncan expects the frost to be replaced by fog in many areas of the country later this week.
