The New Zealand mother of a Sydney teenager who was run down and killed by a train is begging others to learn from the tragedy.

Eighteen-year-old Tre Toman was hit while spraying graffiti in the tunnel of the West Street overpass at Lewisham railway station last night.

Police arrived at the scene following reports from the train driver saying he had hit something.

I grieve for his family. I have known Tre since we met him in Kindergarten and he was loved even then. He was such a cute, dear little boy who grew up to be a kind, lovely young man. My heart goes out to his family and we will always miss him!
