A 23-year-old mother has pleaded guilty to murdering the great-grandson of former New Zealand Maori Affairs Minister Koro Wetere.

Sobbing quietly and dressed all in black, Gemma Gaye Killeen softly replied "guilty" when asked to plea by Western Australia Supreme Court Justice Lindy Jenkins on Friday.

Killeen was arrested shortly after the body of her 22-month-old son, Te Rerenga Wetere, was found floating in Hillarys Boat Harbour on November 26, 2010. TVNZ reported that the child is Mr Wetere's great-grandson.

The young mother had earlier reported her child missing to police before the body was found.

Killeen has been remanded in custody to appear for sentencing on April 20.
