A survey of over 2000 motorists found the majority are willing to pay road tolls and congestion charges if they reduce travel time.

The report by the Business Council for Sustainable Development suggests a raft of options to tackle congestion over the next 30 years, including congestion charges, incentives to use roads off-peak and fees for fast lanes.

Business Council Chief Executive Peter Neilson says the best option to decrease traffic jams in the future is getting more people into the same car.

Nearly 52 percent of those surveyed agreed with paying road charges if a free alternative was available.

I agree with Kane. I am from the UK and workedas a truck driver in and around London where they have used the congestion charge system for a number of years now and it has made no difference what so ever; There is just as much traffic, if not more, as there has ever been. It is just another way of taking our hard earned cash.
Road Tolls are just the same. I used the QE2 Bridge over the Thames every day and 9 times out of ten would end up waiting in a queue for a half hour or more as people messed about sorting out their cash to pay the fee.
Governments worldwide are bleeing the people dry with their taxes and they have to wake up to the fact that this can't go on. You can only push people so far before they start to push back and I fear that the public are fast approaching the point of "enough is enough"

I'm not one of them as long as their is always a alt rout Ill take it... If you allow tolls it would just become the normal and the taxes we pay for good road will just be diverted else were... Tolls are just another road user tax!! And using the congestion sales pitch is just another excuse for them wanting money be weary with these sales tactics $2 dollars today to travel a toll road $10 dollars in five years once the gravy train of workers start relying on tolls for incomes... I am guessing not many Aucklanders were asked nor many low to middle class Lets face it 4 dollars a day a extra 22 dollars a week to travel to work and back hmmm dont think so... Just think 20yrs time it might cost 30 dollars to go to Wellington from Auckland after using all the tolls their and back... Which will conventionally be added to your monthly bill after using the electronic toll roads...
