Traffic's set to grind to a halt in central Auckland today as hundreds pound the pavement as the city hosts its first Triathlon World Cup event.
Around 1100 age-group athletes and 120 elite athletes representing 34 countries will be in action.
Auckland Transport spokesperson Wally Thomas says several roads will be affected including Quay, Customs, Shortland and Princes streets:
“Our advice is for people to leave themselves plenty of time or use alternative routes if you’re heading in to watch the event or trying to get across town.”
The racing began at 7 am with a two-lap, 1.5-kilometre water swim near Queen's Wharf.
Many of the CBD's main streets will be closed for much of the day.
