A man has been charged with murder after the body of a 38-year-old was found at a block of flats in Hamilton.
Emergency services were called to a house in the suburb of Frankton just before 5pm yesterday after reports of an assault.
Police say when emergency services arrived at the Wha Street address, they found the man dead.
Detective Sergeant Daryl Smith says a 28-year-old man was arrested at the scene and today charged with murder.
"A 28-year-old man located in an adjoining flat was initially arrested for assault but has since been charged with murder."
Mr Smith said the offender was interviewed again this morning and will be appearing in the Hamilton District Court later today.
A scene guard was in place overnight and the occupants of six of the eight flats in the building had been found alternative accommodation.
"The priorities for the inquiry team today are speaking to witnesses and completing the scene examination which will be assisted by the arrival of forensic experts from Auckland.”
A post-mortem will be carried out once the body is removed from the scene.
Mr Smith said the victim’s family visited the scene overnight.
"The victim's family has been provided assistance from Victim Support and was able to carry out a blessing at the scene overnight."
