British rockers Muse have taken the title of Best Guitar Riff of the 21st Century for their 2001 hit ‘Plug in Baby’.

The band saw off competition from Velvet Revolver's ‘Slither’ and Avenged Sevenfold's ‘Afterlife’ to lead a poll by Total Guitar magazine, which complied the top 10 most catchy rock tunes.

The top five is rounded out by another Muse track – ‘Knights Of Cydonia’ - at four and Dream Theater's ‘The Dark Eternal Night’ at five.

Total Guitar editor Stephen Lawson says, "I think Muse won because (frontman) Matt Bellamy is a guitar hero for the 21st century.

"He's genuinely innovative, a real creative type who comes up with unique guitar parts. I'm sure it helps that his riffs are catchy too."

Other tracks to make the top 10 include ‘No One Knows’ by Queens of the Stone Age, White Stripes' ‘Seven Nation Army’ and The Killers' ‘Mr Brightside’.
