A former Nelson music teacher has lost a bid to overturn his conviction and sentence for sexually assaulting a young girl during her music lessons.

Last year Warren Bruce Fenemor, then 54, was sentenced in Nelson District Court to five months' home detention for indecently assaulting a seven-year-old guitar student in 2008.

The girl's mother became suspicious she saw Fenemor kneeling in front of her daughter with his hand between her legs.

She decided to film the next two lessons with a hidden camera before calling police.

Fenemor appealed both the conviction and sentence, saying the jury's verdict was unreasonable and not supported by the evidence.

He also said some evidence was wrongly admitted, the judge misdirected the jury and there was a miscarriage of justice because he was not allowed to demonstrate to the court how he held the guitar.

In a Court of Appeal decision released today, Justices Terence Arnold, Warwick Gendall and Christopher Allan dismissed the appeal.

They said there was no miscarriage of justice and the sentence was not manifestly excessive.

Fenemor was ordered to report to Community Probation Service to begin his sentence on May 27.
