Some big names have put their weight behind SurfAid International's upcoming Christmas CD.

Crowded House, Liam Finn and Kelley James are among those sharing their music to raise funds to fight deadly diseases in areas frequented by surfers.

"When I saw the track listing I was honoured," musician Kelley James says. "Growing up in California so close to the beach, I just thought it was incredible they put something together like this and given it full effort. It's amazing. I wanted to get my music involved."

SurfAid International is the surfing world's leading charitable organisation and was founded in Gisborne eight years ago by Kiwi Dr Dave Jenkins.

Dr Jenkins went to surf the Mentawai Islands in Indonesia and found a local population ravaged by malaria with no resources to fight it.

Fellow Gisbornite and Kiwi surf champ Maz Quinn has visited the islands five times during the last five years and has seen what SurfAid has done to improve the quality of life there.

Plenty of other high profile surfing names have also lent their power to the people. Living legends like Kelly Slater and Mark Occhilupo are all SurfAid supporters.

The CD hits record stores next week, with all of its profits going to SurfAid. The album will also hit ITunes in the new year.
