My Officer and My Gentlemen

Wed, 15 Jul 2009 12:00a.m.

This week, last week, and the 12 previous weeks before those I have been ridiculously proud, excited and happy for my FH.

He has been away in Rotorua intensively training for the Fire Service in every aspect imaginable - I never realised they did so much - Fire Behaviour, First Aid, Breathing Apparatus, Search and Rescue, Hazardous Spills, Motor Vehicle Accidents, Hose Skills, Ladders, Drills, Marching, Educating children, Parade and more.

And now he is a fully trained and graduated Fire Fighter!!

Now I know that it isn’t going to be easy- for either of us. There is going to be a lot of stress, pressure, situations and scenes that most people never have to be exposed too, and not to mention having to adjust our lifestyle to shift work- there go the weekends!

And of course the fear that one day he just won’t come home from a shift and a little red car will pull up in my driveway… (No Carrie- you are NOT, I repeat NOT in an American Blockbuster Movie)

All drama aside, of course there are various risks involved, but aren’t there in most jobs? In crossing the street? And yet here he is beginning a highly respected career dedicated to helping others in our community, whilst looking highly attractive in a perfectly ironed and de-cat-haired uniform. YES uniform.

I am so proud (and a lot like the cat that got the cream). I just can’t wait to be a 'Fireman’s Wife' Maybe all of us wives will get together and have long nights drinking wine and talking about… fire? (We’ll be just like Footballers wives only classier).

And as much as he loves his uniform, he won’t be wearing it for the wedding- he is after all going to be wearing it every four days for the rest of his life, and he deserves to wear a once in a lifetime outfit for our wedding day just like I do with my dress.. ooh my dress. Drool.

But there is nothing stopping him changing into his uniform for a wee reenactment of the final scene from An Officer and A Gentlemen now is there?

I'm getting married to my childhood sweetheart in Feb 2010. We live in our own home in Auckland, along with our 3 adorable, time consuming Meows. I'm creative, opinionated, indecisive, organised, imaginative, a little crazy and not very good at keeping quiet about things that excite me... so this is going to be my perfect playground!
