I have lived in Chiang Mai for several years and I have woken in the morning more than once with headaches nausea and dizziness. What i have noticed is that the bathrooms can smell terrible in the morning and after watching buildings being constructed I now know why. The bathroom is never built with a u-trap under the shower so the drain goes straight into the septic tank and the sewage gas goes right from the tank back into the bathroom. It builds up over night when the occupant is asleep and can't smell the gas which consists of methane, ammonia co2 and bacteria spores. Not a healthy combination. This building shortcoming is common across Asia so presumably if it did cause death there would be a lot more fatalities but may be there has to be some added effect that can lead to fatality. Like a lack of ventilation that led to high concentrations of sewage gas and so asphyxiation or poisoning. The symptoms of those who died seem very specific and probably not related to gassing but whatever the possibilities the omission of the U-trap is a serious health issue. When visiting an Asian country I recommend making sure you always get a room with good ventilation and if you feel to let the management know that the omission of safe guards in the plumbing is totally unacceptable in western countries. I have tried telling them and they get very embarrassed and defensive.

Toxicology report and lab tests may give the answer if done correctly. If the food was bad we would probably see more deaths from that food vendor. Since multiple people died at the hotel the cause would more likely be found there. The most likely, in my opinion, is carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide poisoning looks like food poisoning, causes heart problems and heart attacks. In February, the temperatures dropped low enough at night in Chaing Mai to possibly require some room heat. I don't know if that hotel has central or room heat but if heating system is not ventilated correctly or has a damaged heat exchanger, then carbon monoxide poisoning is a possibility. There are other sources of CO such as a portable generator or even a charcoal BBQ. A major hotel in San Francisco had CO deaths in January 2011. A good toxicology report will tell if this was the cause. I hope that the cause of Sarah's death is found because no other family should suffer from a loss like this.

Ken Ring is right about one thing - John should shut the hell up and let people answer questions. Unfortunately, I can't form any conclusions from that interview because I didn't get to hear any theories. No one cares what you think Campbell, you're more suited to Fox News.

Dear John CampbellCould you please inform me personally and/or the public as to how far the japanese 8.9 earthquake and subsequent tsunami travelled inland and what that distance would be in relation to us living in the lowlands of Christchurch. E.g. I live in Merivale. Could you inform me whether the Jap. Tsunami would hit me and where I should travel too in order to be safe. I think a lot of us would like to know and have a map showing positions around chch and high buildings that are safe and places we should go too.Thanking youAnnie P

Corruption runs deep in the hearts of the Chiang Mai officials. I hope that you continue to run this story and shed some light into Soraya, Sarah and the rest of the victims deaths. It is unacceptable to say that these are all mere coincidences.

Thank you for shedding light on the striking similarities between Soraya and Sarah's deaths. It is my hope that the Chiang Mai governor is moved by this coverage to look deeper into the causes of myocarditis, which was the cause of death in two healthy young women, plus very possibly the deaths of others. Please continue to bring attention to this story!
