The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric research is trialling new technology in an effort to insure New Zealanders can be ready for extreme weather conditions.

The system uses NIWA's $13 million supercomputer to forecast severe storms and flooding more accurately.

NIWA hopes to provide 48 hours notice of extreme weather events through the system.

The results of the trials should be known within three months.
