New Zealand Post has announced changes to its stores, confirming what had been rumoured.
Around 90 staff will be affected, although the number of redundancies have not been determined.
NZ Post will set up self-service kiosks in response to the chain’s financial struggle to keep stores open.
Technology has largely been the reason for PostShop Kiwibank’s difficulty in sustaining a physical customer-base, with more people turning to online services to pay their bills.
Factors such as ongoing migration to larger shopping complexes, along with people shopping closer to their workplace rather than their homes were other strong influences on where NZ Post located stores.
NZ Post will be closing some stores and cutting back banking services to just cater to postal and courier services.
Seven stores in total are due to close from late June – four in Auckland, two in Wellington and one in Dunedin.
After the proposed changes NZ Post will have 910 postal outlets, of which 280 will be PostShop and Kiwibank stores.
