The Chiefs have pulled off a New Zealand first by naming co-captains for the upcoming Super Rugby season.
Waikato’s Liam Messum, and Taranaki’s Craig Clarke will fill the dual role, in what is a first for a Kiwi Super Rugby franchise.
Chiefs’ coach Dave Rennie says that the 24 week season was a key reason behind the decision.
“It is a long season and this decision will allow the co-captains with their complimentary skill sets, to share the extensive load,” Rennie says.
Clarke, who captains Taranaki, says the role is a huge honour, and a unique opportunity to work alongside Liam Messum.
Messum says he’s excited about the season ahead.
“I’m rapt to be involved in a captaincy role again this year. It is an exciting new era for the Chiefs which I am stoked to be a part of,” he says.
Twenty-seven year old Messum has played 79 games for the Chiefs, while Clarke has played 41 for the franchise.
