Two New Zealand Red Cross aid workers are heading to flood-stricken Papua New Guinea.

At least 40 people are feared dead, with 20 more still missing, after a massive landslide wiped out two villages near the town of Mendi in the country's Southern Highlands Province on Tuesday as people slept.

Other areas of PNG have suffered widespread flooding.

New Zealanders Bill Olsen and Matthew were briefed on Friday and are flying to PNG on Saturday.

New Zealand Red Cross International Programmes Manager Glenn Rose says the men will be supporting those who have lost their homes and loved ones.

The aid workers are due to return on February 4.
