New Zealand's alcohol laws could be set for an overhaul as part of a global alcohol strategy

New Zealand's alcohol laws could be overhauled as part of a global alcohol strategy, decided in a few days time.

The plans, which aim to reduce harmful effects of alcohol, have been put forward to the World Health Organisation's executive committee.

Alcohol Advisory Council chief executive Gerard Vaughan says when it comes to New Zealand, many of our current laws need addressing.

“The availability of alcohol 24 hours a day, we will be wanting a pullback from 24-hour licensing. We want measures in place, meaning that you couldn’t sell alcohol for the cheapest price because we know that contributes to additional drinking.”

Mr Vaughan says New Zealand's alcohol laws are already under review so now would be the perfect time to adopt a global strategy.
