A Kiwi man has died while base jumping in Switzerland, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed.

Alan McCandlish, 31, was jumping in the Berner Oberland range on Saturday when he got too close to the cliff face.

Witnesses say the man – who was wearing a wingsuit – hit a rock before plunging to the ground, according to Fairfax NZ.

The man was dead before emergency services arrived.
