New Zealand's campaign at the under-19 cricket World Cup ended on a low note when they crashed to an eight-wicket loss to South Africa in the playoff for third in Townsville on Saturday.

After being dismissed for a paltry 90 in the 37th over, the New Zealanders couldn't stop South Africa racing to 94-2 inside 15 overs.

The New Zealand batting lineup faltered badly, with Connor Neynans' unbeaten 21 the top score.

Legspinner David Rhoda was the chief destroyer, taking 4-26.

It was a disappointing end for the New Zealanders, who pipped the West Indies in a thrilling quarter-final and were eliminated in a tight semi-final by India.

Hosts and defending champions Australia play India in the final on Sunday.
