New Zealand police are sending a DNA sample from a Queenstown girl to the UK to rule her out of the hunt for missing British girl Madeleine McCann.

Scotland Yard has requested the sample following a sighting of the girl in Queenstown on New Year's Eve, Fairfax reports.

A local retailer reported she was suspicious of a man with a young girl who bore a resemblance to Madeleine.

The woman said the girl had the same rare eye defect as Madeleine, and she felt obliged to contact police in the slim chance it could be the missing girl.

New Zealand police are satisfied she's not Madeleine, who went missing in Portugal in 2007 aged 4, while on holiday with her parents.

In 2010 a security camera picture of a Dunedin girl who looked like Madeleine taken in December 2007 was released by a Portuguese court. But police later confirmed the girl was not Madeleine.

The results of the DNA test won't be available for weeks.

To Andie, the first photo above is of Madeline in 2007. The second photo is an age progression photo of what Madeline might look like in 2009. The second photo is NOT of the girl they are DNA testing.

You can see from the shape of the eye defect that she is a different girl.

@ Graham Perry - I'm curious, why would you personally have good reason to believe Madeleine is alive? Would you mind elaborating?

Did they look to see if she had a birth mark on her leg? Did this girl not have birth certificate, dna tested of her family, school, doctor records, photographs of her at three year old, NZ police satisfied it wasnt Maddy, so why Scotland yard demand dna test. cannot be same girl seen before as was in Dunedin not Queenstown.

Whether or not this young girl is Madeleine McCann or not I am glad Scotland Yard asked the New Zealand Police for a D.N.A-SAMPLE. This will finally clear this matter up. Personally I have very good reason to believe that Madeleine is alive. The answer to Madeleine's where-abouts is probably in Portugal. And try to remember Madeleine is the innocent victim in all this and think about Jaycee Lee Dugard and many other children who have been found alive that were in a similar situation like Madeleine. Some people really are quite ignorant. And just like the certain people in Portugal, they pretend it never happened or listen to some X-DECTIVE who hasn't got the full facts and has made money from Madeleine's missing situation.

Thank you New Zealand for all your efforts to help in the search for Madeleine, Beware that a group who have spent the past 5+ years harrassing her parents have seen that this comment section is open and are likely to be heading this way, it seems one has already found it.

How unfortunate for every 9 year old girl who bears a passing resemblance to what any particular person might think madeleine MAY look like IF she is still alive. the girl in India last year was apparently accosted by the person who spotted her. A girl who was travelling from Ibiza to Germany with her family was photographed on an airport bus then had said photo plastered all over UK newspapers. There was a Swedish girl at a car show on UK front pages, a young girl in Australia on cctv and the little girl in Morocco, again all over the front pages. And those are just the ones off the top of my head! How ironic that the McCanns are so vocal about their own privacy with regard to British news media, yet these young girls and their families' privacy are totally disregarded in the name of McCann PR. Also, similar looking girls could be subjected to frightening episodes at the hands of over-zealous well-wishers if they think it's appropriate to accost them in order to identify them. And now we have this particular lookalike subjected to the intrusion of a DNA test. Interestingly, earlier today at the royal courts of justice today in London, the McCanns' own lawyer was forced to admit that she was unable to declare with any certainty that Madeleine was indeed abducted, as the only supporting information she had was what she had been told by her clients. If there existed any evidence of abduction then she would have been able to refer to abduction as an established fact as opposed to merely the parents' supposed theory.
